Highlights of the Amazon

Pacaya Samiria Reserve

The second largest protected natural area in Peru, the Pacaya Samiria Reserve is a beautiful oasis home to the most extraordinary wildlife on the planet. With biodiversity including over 1,000 animal species and 965 types of wild plants, this natural haven is a highlight reel of nature’s most fascinating creatures.

Also known as the Jungle of Mirrors, the Pacaya Samiria Reserve is the largest protected flooded forest in the world. Amazon River tours offer you the opportunity to sail through the glorious rainforest along the Samiria River, spotting squirrel monkeys, toucans and sloths from the comfort of the boat. You can also journey to a dolphin feeding spot.

The Meeting of the Waters

The Amazon River forms the confluence of the Solimões River and the Negro River. The rivers run side-by-side for many kilometres without mixing, before meeting just east of the Brazilian city of Manaus to form the start of the Amazonas River. It is a marvellous spectacle to see the muddy Solimões stream aside the striking black waters of the Negro River.

The Anavilhanas Archipelago

For nature lovers, Anavilhanas Archipelago is a must-visit when on an Amazon River Tour. One of the most unique environments on earth, the complex comprises over 400 islands in the heart of the Amazon and is the world’s largest system of river islands. Nicknamed the “flooded forest”, the landmasses populating the area are surrounded by dense rainforest and are covered by hundreds of lakes, channels and waterfalls.

If you’re planning to go during the rainy season, you will even be able to sail over the flooded roads connecting one isle to the next. Keep your eyes on the skies during your visit, as 60% of the birds observed in the Central Amazon are visible in this area, as well as 25 species of amphibians and 42 species of reptiles. Another remarkable aspect of the Anavilhanas Archipelago is that it is the only part of the rainforest where you can see every single one of its alligator species.
